Motorola Droid upgrade to Android 2.1

I had been waiting for the update to Android 2.1 on my Motorola Droid since the rumors started to fly. Maybe a week ago I found my phone in the morning with the OTA (over the air) message announcing my upgrade to Anroid 2.1. I quickly read the screen and then pressed the update button. Nothing, hmmm, another press of the update button, ... nothing. I frantically pressed the update button and then realized it was not going to work. I then pressed the more info button and POOF, the ota message disappeared and left me looking at the home screen.

I assumed that the update would come back or that checking for system updates would allow me to get the new update. Days went by and I never received an opportunity to update to Android 2.1. I did receive an email from Verizon thanking me for upgrading and telling me about the new features that I could not use. Just a touch of salt in my wounds.

Tonight, I finally had the time to manually update to the new version. I looked around on both the Motorola and Verizon sites for an official Android 2.1 update file, but could not find the one. I took the time to post on the Motorola support forum explaining my situation, but short of a minute after making the post I set out to find a copy of the update on Google. I spent this much time on this already, so my patience was thinning. I ended up using the file and instructions provided here, http://www.droid-life.com/2010/03/31/manual-android-2-1-update-for-motorola-droid/.

After the simple process my phone started and seemed to work correctly. A quick run through of my favorite apps revealed good things, except for the fact that Google Maps crashed upon startup. I unistalled and then reinstalled Google Maps and it seems to function correctly.

The update process could have gone smoother, but I guess that is how things go...

If you wanna take a chance and have a little fun I suggest looking into "Rooting" your droid. Alldroid.org has so much information on the subject along with tons of free ROMS. 2 major things that will come out of rooting ur droid, WIRELESS TETHERing and Overclocking the phone. I have had nothing but fun playing with the different roms.

I didn't have any problems with the manual update, either. But I wanted more than three homescreens. Check out the Helix Launcher app.
